Feral Children – Myspace Songs Review

Maybe this is the new wave of reviews and a way to cut costs in the modern world as we know it, but I’m doing another myspace songs review.  Up to bat is Feral Children from Sarathan Records in Seattle.  Record labels from Seattle, good start.  The bands debut album is produced by Scott Colburn who produced a little band you may have heard of, Animal Collective.  Even better start.

Feral Children Track by track review

SpyGlass House6/10 – The comparisons to Animal Collective are inevitable.  On this song, they do less of the jam style and add more metal / drone elements.  On the chorus the vocals are reminiscent of Modest Mouse with a little metal yell at the end and then a melodic transition.  As you can see, a lot of moving parts here.   The song is still a little rough around the edges, somewhat intentionally I believe, but still needs work.

Jaundice Giraffe7/10 – If you just played the first few minutes of the song, then you might think you were actually listening to Animal Collective until you heard the random belts from the lead singer.  This song has more of of a repetitive jam feel that is paired with loud and soft vocals.  I like this song a little better, but still some room for improvement in this style of music.

Zyghost6.5 – This is more of an up tempo poppy song relative to their other songs on their myspace.  Driving percussion with a melodic chorus really make this song.

In the end, this is a young band with some potential trying to find their niche in an increasingly popular genera.  It will be interesting to see how they develop and get mentored through their tours with other artists.  This genera isn’t exactly my cup of tea and I still prefer others like Animal Collective (who are still growing on me) that have refined their craft more than Feral Children.

  1. Hi there! I know you said FC isn’t your cup of tea, but I’m glad you are giving them a chance. They are definitely an amazing band, they have 2 drummers for pete’s sake! Those interested in listening to a true Seattle band should go here to download their free EP: http://sarathan.com/free/feralchildren_ep/
