Sub Pop Singles Club – November – Black Mountain “Lucy Brown” b/w “Shelter”

Featured on clear green vinyl we have 2 songs from Black Mountain for the November  installment of Sub Pop Singles Club.

“Lucy Brown” has got this classic rock style theme throughout.  I kind of like the homage to older rock styles and that classic ode to a girl song.  Black Mountain put their stamp on the chorus with a little electronic number.  Not totally original, but not much is these days.  Kind of a cool song for an indie rock exclusive 7″

“Shelter” is an upbeat/downbeat psych rock tune.  If you’re familiar with this group then you know what I mean.  Their are interweaving guy / girl vocals throughout the song which kind of break the stereotype of this genre.  They’re not totally psych rock where you can’t get into it without a drugs because they have likable and exploratory moments outside that genre.   The do the sort of upbeat catchy part for the main theme of the song then slow it down for a breakdown section, which gives it some variety at first then kind of gets mundane.  Kind of a basic song, but simple enough to be likable.

Probably my favorite release from the Singles Club thus far, but that isn’t saying much.  Relative to the previous type of releases on former Singles Club this one pales in comparison.  Nonetheless, taken for what it is, I like the songs and still look forward to what is next month.
