Evening Magazine – The Ride Across Lake Constance (Ohso, 2009)

Right from the opening track I knew I would enjoy this Ep.  It’s a great introduction to a band trying to get their feet underneath them in an ever-growing genre.  With this strong of a first release I anticipate they’re have no trouble with that.  They remind me of Death Cab For Cutie or Anathallo in their early not-yet-indie-stars-yet days.  You can really hear the ambition and potential in the record.  They compliment a newly growing genre with bands like Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend, and Throw Me the Statue.  It’s not exactly bubble gum pop, but very creative indie pop.  It’s a refreshing and easy genre to enjoy as you usually know right away if the song has potential or not.

While their initial song “Apple Eye” stands out as the Ep’s true single, the rest of the songs are quality as well.  It would be hard to pick just one.  The only disappointing part is the record only being an Ep and wishing there was more material to listen to.  I will definitely be looking for their full length.  They could work on better cover art when they do make it in the indie scene.  I have a feeling that it won’t be long.
