Austin City Limits: Andrew Bird on 10/23/09
I have my DVR set to record Austin City Limits every Saturday night and this weekend I was able to catch Andrew Bird and St. Vincent. Andrew Bird played about 6 or 7 songs and then St. Vincent came out. I had previously seen St. Vincent when she opened for the National and I really wasn’t much interested in her then and I’m still not now. As you can see from the photo he almost has a Sufjan Stevens look to him. Tall, skinny, and plenty of indie nerd vibe that makes the chicks go crazy. His penchant for whistling is evident right from the beginning as he opens with a violin whistling solo then fades into the set. In the background are some old phonograph extensions two of which are split and facing opposites ends and then they spin as the music crescendos. The band was on time and gelled together nicely fading in and out of songs seamlessly. I only had two criticisms of the set. One negative aspect was that the good material from Armchair Apocrypha wasn’t included much. Only one song made it into the set that I liked. Also, the set was rather short, 6 or 7 songs leave you just wanting more.

MP3: The Dutchess & The Duke “Hands”
Per Hardly Art:
Dutchess and the Duke leader Jesse Lortz is discussing the genesis and execution of his band’s sophomore record, Sunset / Sunrise, a slump-dodging opus that takes the dark, raw beauty of the band’s debut and scales it up to distinctly luminescent heights, thanks to a graceful synthesis of painfully earned creative maturity and thoughtful production under Ashley’s adroitly tuned ears. The Gris Gris frontman’s analog-equipped, Bay Area studio was the ideal space for Lortz and fellow vocalist and guitarist Kimberly Morrison to arch their intimate musical dialog into the larger shape they had envisioned. Much of what colors Sunset / Sunrise’s ten tracks is the confidence the duo acquired during extensive touring throughout 2008 in support of their debut, She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke.

Lewis Black @ The Adler Theater in Davenport, IA on 10/9/09
Lewis Black is now 61 years of age. Colored with a little more gray hair his act has also matured. He still does his “mental breakdowns” as the Windego Times refers to his angry rants, but he’s more calm and mellow. I don’t believe those words have ever been used in a Lewis Black review, but there they are. He was on tour to support his new movie Stark Raving Black. Read more »
Book Review: Tupac The Resurection

I was allowed the opportunity to read this book through my work as a part of a GED and Literacy group. First, the group reads the book in a given amount of time, then they take a quiz and they can watch the movie if they pass the quiz. Ironically the movie is 2 hours long and it took me less than that to finish the book. Another interesting aspect was that for a Literacy group the book was filled with grammatical errors. I guess there is something to be said for learning from others mistakes. Read more »

“Twenty Cycles To The Ground”
Per the SC Website: To Be Released 11/2/09
Consider the collective catalogs of these two prolific masters of the new American folk songcraft: Magnolia Electric Co., Centro-matic, Songs: Ohia, South San Gabriel. Now, let’s just be honest. A little bit of artistic ego and one-upsmanship can serve a greater purpose. In this collaboration between Jason Molina and Will Johnson, each seem to hold the other’s talents to the fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poets’ poets in a workshop to craft a singular, searing elegy. Read more »
