5 QUESTIONS WITH ALISON ROSEN

An established journalist who has written for Rolling Stone, The NY Post, Page Six Magazine, Vibe, Spin, Maxim, The Village Voice, People, Seventeen, Yahoo and Elle and a go-to TV guest commentator, Alison Rosen has a quick wit, sharp tongue and a keen sense of pop culture, news and humor.  Alison began her career as a professional journalist early – scoring a contributing writer byline for the Los Angeles Times while still in high school in California. A prodigious writer and guitarist in a punk rock band, Alison worked at the OC Weekly in Orange County as a music writer and then as Features Editor before moving to New York and helming the “Hot Seat” section of Time Out New York where she worked from 2005 to 2008.  Alison has also carved a niche for herself as a pretty, witty and slightly devilish TV writer and guest, appearing regularly on the late-night gab-fest “Red Eye” on Fox News Channel, where she has also helped to develop the show’s distinctive double entendre guest introductions.  She is also the host of her own podcast “Alison Rosen is your New Best Friend”, and she is the newswoman on Adam Carolla’s extremely popular radio show.  And most important of all, she was cool enough to be our guest today in 5 Questions.

FOH:   What was the strangest thing that happened to you while writing for any of the major publications?  Any particularly awkward encounters with anyone during that period?

AR: For a Valentine’s Day issue of the OC Weekly my editor asked if I’d want to review a Playboy “Sex Ed. 101” video we’d received. I did–and not exactly favorably--but somehow I still ended up on a Playboy media press list which resulted in my brief tenure as what we jokingly referred to as “porn editor.” As such I received a slew of VHS tapes which I couldn’t give away fast enough, invitations to the Playboy Mansion (not to name drop, but I saw Scott Baio and Pauly Shore) and I ended up on the set of a Playboy TV show called “Sex Court” where the cases weren’t real and the justice was sexy. If something can be, at once, surreal, mundane, and full of dildos, that’s what it was. But lest anyone get the wrong idea I mostly interviewed musicians and celebrities and regular people too. Not just sex workers.

FOH:  You are the newswoman on “The Adam Carolla Show” and you also have your own podcast called “Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend”, both of which are very successful.  Is the comedy podcast market a bit oversaturated?  And do you think that your answer to that question would be different if you were on a show that wasn’t ranked as high when it comes to the number of downloads?

AR: Hm. Hmmmmmm. Well I do think there are a lot of comedy podcasts but I don’t know that I’d say the market is oversaturated yet. It’s still such a young medium and people who like to listen to podcasts are game to discover new ones. I don’t know that my answer would change if the rankings were different. As long as I felt my listeners were connecting with me and I was putting out something that was true and genuine and that I enjoyed creating I would feel somewhat satisfied. And also, no matter how well you’re doing there’s always room for growth and improvement. You’re always thinking about how to get more listeners and hoping your listeners will spread the word.

FOH:  If you had to give the media as a whole a score from one to ten as to how accurate they have been with regards to domestic issues since Barack Obama has become president, what would that score be?  Why?

AR: I was hired on The Adam Carolla Show while Obama was president and sure, there were a couple little blurbs in the local press and some blogs and things but on a grand scale, the story of a bewitching woman beating the odds to join a podcast was mysteriously absent from the mainstream media. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

FOH:  Fox News’ “Red Eye” seems like a very interesting comedy roundtable show and it fascinates me to no end.  Why do you think that show is more appealing to watch than, (let’s just) say for example “Comics Unleashed”?  What was the most important thing that you took away from your appearances on “Red Eye” over the years?

AR: The thing with “Comics Unleashed” is that at no time are you ever fooled into thinking you’re witnessing something off the cuff. You’re always very aware you’re watching chunks of someone’s prepared material with these hokey set ups. “Red Eye” is very spontaneous and absurd and fast-moving. And nearly everyone involved in making that show will abandon whatever serious point they’re trying to make if the opportunity to make a better joke comes by, which I appreciate immensely.

FOH:  If you could have any job within the entertainment industry, what would it be?  What about that job seems so intriguing to you?

AR: Honestly I’m really happy doing what I’m doing now. I’d love to just keep growing both shows and seeing where it all takes me. It’s been really exciting to launch Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend and watch it find a voice and an audience. Now we’re doing ARIYNBF live shows which is fun. But do I have TV show ideas in the back of my head along with plans for world domination? Of course I do.

FOH:  What’s next for Alison Rosen in the twelve months to come?  Any big plans?

AR: I need a haircut. And I’d like to somehow incorporate ducklings into the live shows. If anyone knows how I can do this or has a constant supply of ducklings and can keep me in ducklings, don’t be a stranger. And by the way, I’m not even joking. Also I’m starting a syndicated column soon so look for that on a computer or newsstand near you.
